I don't want to pretend that there isn't a problem. Major financial markets are in trouble - markets were too free, money was way too cheap and here we are. What we don't need to hear is the exaggeration of this situation by the press. I just turned a well-known news program off because they decided to introduce the show with 'Global Meltdown' scrolling across the bottom of the screen. A global meltdown? Really? Is fire raining from the sky and are houses sinking into the molten earth? Some perspective would be great. Some good news would be even better! I was discussing this idea with a friend, his anecdote was about how some banks are not lining up to get bail-out money but no one talks about them, we focus only on the ones that are in trouble. Shouldn't we look at the banks that don't need help? Track their progress? Learn from them? I can only speak for myself, as an entrepreneur, but when I have a crisis, I don't talk non-stop about the nature of the crisis, the extent of the crisis, I don't sit in a corner and pull out my hair. I spend a limited amount of time on working out how I got there but then I go into solutions mode - try everything and anything I can think of and work at it 24 hours a day until a solution is developed and delivered. Wouldn't it be more interesting for the press to debate the proposals, the suggestions and plans to get the banks lending again? What I do like is how I see my fellow social entrepreneurs responding business as usual isn't working so how can we help? How can our unique and dynamic models shine through all the negativity? If cash is scarce then lets start bartering, negotiating. This is an incredibly opportunity for change, ingenuity, resourcefulness is it wrong to be excited by all of this?
