Q. What would I be doing day-to-day? A. The programme includes a mix of placement time, training and events. You will be predominantly based with your placement charity. On Wednesday afternoons, we will come together for training time at Oxford Hub, which is designed to complement your on-the-role learning. Our team will also host a variety of networking, volunteering and social events which will enable to connect with like-minded people across the City.
Q. Who can apply? A. This opportunity is open to ALL current university students, both undergraduates and post-graduates. Applicants should have access to accommodation in Oxford for the length of the programme as the activities, training and placement will all be local. We will also be prioritising applicants who will be staying in Oxford (to continue studying or working) after the summer, as this will enable them to continue to put their skills and knowledge into practice in the local community.
Q. What are the typical roles during the internship placement? A. Oxford Hub has been running summer placements across the local charity sector for the past 11 years. Opportunities include placements relating to research, report writing, fundraising, communications, marketing, event organisation and more. You will have a project you can take responsibility for during your placement, and you will have the opportunity to get involved in more day-to-day activities at your host organisation.
Q. Do I need lots of experience? A. This opportunity is aimed at individuals who have already got some experience of social action, for example through volunteering, campaigning or work experience. We are looking to take on people who can demonstrate their motivation and interest in social issues, and are looking to put these skills into practice and take them to the next level!
Q. Are placements paid? A. Placements are undertaken on a voluntary basis, but all charities reimburse lunch and travel expenses in order to support you as part of your placement.
Q. Does it cost to participate? A. We are offering this summer development programme free of charge to 10 students. This includes connecting you with a placement host, mentoring support during the programme, training, and social events. There is a £100 deposit to confirm your place in the programme, which will be reimbursed to you upon successful completion of your placement at the end of the five weeks. You will need to find accommodation in Oxford as this is not included as part of the programme.
Q. What kind of training will I get? A. The programme’s training will provide an insight into social and environmental issues in Oxford, as well as an opportunity to develop the skills you’ll need to create a social impact. We will cover key areas such as communications, mobilising volunteers, fundraising and impact measurement. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about Oxford Hub’s strategy, and delve deeper in any topics which you may be particularly interested in with the support and mentoring of our staff team.
Q. What happens after the programme finishes? A. A core part of the programme is getting our Fellows committed to being involved in social action across Oxford City, as continued action is one of the most effective ways to build demonstrable skills for the future. As a Fellow, you will be offered leadership positions on community projects, Hub project committees and other initiatives, tailored to your interests and strengths.
