OxCo-op makes ethical food accessible and affordable in the Oxford community
Every Friday afternoon of term, 3:30-5:30PM
In the Oxford Hub, above Turl St Kitchen
What is OxCo-op?
OxCo-op is a way of communally bulk-buying more socially and environmentally sustainable food. Working together, we have the power and capital to have much more of a say in where our food comes from and which ethical standards it must reach. By choosing to buy directly from ethical wholesalers and local producers, we build a feasible alternative to chain supermarkets.
Place your order on a Sunday evening (oxcoop.com) and pick up from our pop-up shop on the 1st floor of the TSK on a Friday afternoon.
OxCo-op was set up 2012 by a group of friends who refused to accept that a student budget necessarily means a weekly shop to the local chain supermarket. Four years on the group has grown, connecting students from across Oxford to local organic veg supplied by Cultivate and organic/Fairtrade student staples from Bristol co-op Essentials.
But OxCo-op is not just about buying ethical food...
It’s thinking about where it comes from and what impact it has on the world. We hope to run a variety of other activities including film screenings, discussion forums, and speaker events for those interested in where their food comes from.
If you like the sound of what we do then there are plenty of ways to get involved in OxCo-op (aside from just ordering from our shop!).
As a co-operative we rely entirely on student volunteers, from hands on work, sorting veg or helping at our weekly pop up shop, to more ad hoc, with events, publicity and social media. Just click Apply to join in!
In particular we're currently looking for several individuals to get involved in the running of Ox-Coop, including:
A VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR:
Your role will involve encouraging new people to sign-up through volunteers' and freshers' fairs and any means available. You'll also post regular reminders on the Ox Co-op Volunteers Facebook page, and keep our spreadsheet up to date to make sure we know who's been helping out. Not to mention - you'll get the volunteer discount!
Ox Co-op is looking for a secretary to replace the outgoing one. The secretary's job is to communicate with members: they are in charge of the society's email account, must reply to all enquiries and send two reminders a week about orders and volunteer sign-up sheets. Apart from this, the secretary takes minutes at meetings. It's a fun and easy job and you have free reign with emails, so can be as kooky and creative as you like! The only challenge is... can you live up to our current secretary's fabulous emails?! Probably not, but hey ho give it a go anyways.
Find out more: drop us an email, visit our website or just pop by the TSK and see it in action, Friday afternoons from 3.30 - 5.30PM.
